About Russian Language

Russian belongs to the Slavic language group and is now one of the major languages of the world. It is also one of the official languages of the United Nations. Russian is widely used because many countries were once ruled by Russia. 300 million people around the world speak Russian, with 175 million speaking it as a primary language, and around 120 million as a secondary language.

There are two main dialect groups within the language: Northern and Southern. Moscow, the capital city, is the division of those two dialects. The dialects used in Moscow are categorized as either Central or Northern.

As of 2011, the 6th of June, the birthday of the greatest Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, is officially the Day of the Russian Language in Russia.

Speaking Russian is one of conditions for astronauts to qualify for employment at the ISS (International Space Station).

The Russian Internet slang — often referred to as Olbanian — would be almost totally incomprehensible to foreign speakers, even those who speak standard Russian very well, due to intentional misspelling and use of very informal vocabulary.

Russian is one of the most difficult languages to learn for foreign learners due to its very complicated and irregular grammar. In any given sentence, its parts must agree in terms of number, gender, person, grammatical case. There is also an extremely complicated verb conjugation system where every single verb has tens (literally!) of conjugated forms. To add even more complexity, there are many irregular verbs that don’t follow the standard conjugation patterns.
