About German Language

About 90 million people speak German as a native language and it is the most widely spoken language in the European Union. In addition, 80 million people speak it as a non-native language. It is the official language in Germany and 8 more countries.

German dialects can be devised into two principal groups: High German and Low German. One of the most striking differences between them is in the sound system, especially the consonants. It is said that Low German is an older version and High German is considered standard German.

Also, about 65% of the population of Switzerland speak Swiss German, which sounds quite different than ‘standard’ or High German because it has its own vocabulary and different pronunciation.

Lastly there is Austrian German, the national standard variety of the German language spoken in Austria as its official language. There is a distinct grammatical standard for Austrian German compared to the German spoken in Germany.
