About Arabic Language

Arabic is spoken by more than 280 million people in the Middle East and North Africa and is the official language of 26 states.

Azerbaijani is the official language of the Republic of Azerbaijan and is spoken by 30 million people in the world, although the population of Azerbaijan is only 9 million.

The Arabic alphabet was introduced to Azerbaijan in the 7^th century and used until the 1920s. In 1929, the Latin alphabet was introduced in Northern Azerbaijan in an attempt to avoid the influence of Islam. Then the Cyrillic alphabet was adopted in 1939. In 1991 they switched back to the Latin alphabet once again, but a slightly different version from the one used in 1929. These switches obviously caused considerable confusion!

To this day, the Latin alphabet is used in Azerbaijan.

Baluchi is a North-Western Iranian language spoken by about 7 million people. Most Baluchi speakers live in Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan and it is also known as Balochi, Baloci or Baluci.

Originally, the Latin alphabet was used but after Pakistan acquired independence in 1947, Perso-Arabic script was adopted for the written form. In general, the language was identified as a dialect of Persian before the post-colonial period. At the time, it was just an oral language and there was no traditional writing system.

There are two major dialects: Sulaymani (Eastern) and Makrani (Western). The Makrani dialect is most widely used.

Belarusian is an Eastern Slavonic language spoken by about 7.5 million speakers in Belarus. It is closely related to Russian and Ukrainian.

Russian became the official language of Belarus in 1995 by referendum so most Belarusians are bilingual in Belarusian and Russian.  Due to the complicated history of Belarus (invasions by others), its spelling system is structured by Polish, Russian and other languages based on the Latin alphabet.

As a result, in the 19^th century, it became a combination spelling system and took many years for people to agree on a standard. Nevertheless, there are only two major dialects in the Belarusian language, North-Eastern and South-Western.

Bengali is the official language of Bangladesh with 230 million speakers, which is high on the list of the most spoken languages in the world, and the second most in India.

There are six spoken dialects. After claiming independence from Britain, Bengali became the Eastern Bengali of Pakistan. However, Eastern and Western Pakistan had different official languages and this triggered the independence of Bengali from Pakistan in 1971. This historical affair is well known as the Bengali Language Movement and it is celebrated by a memorial day in Bengali called International Mother Language Day.

Bosnian is spoken in Bosnia and Herzegovina by 3 million people.

It developed from the South Slavic language family. In fact, it is considered a Shavian dialect. However, Bosnian was introduced as the sole official language of Bosnia in the early 1900s. The Latin alphabet is used in the modern Bosnian language today.

In 2007 it was added as a European Union language. Bulgarian was the first Slavic language to be written in history. The modern Bulgarian language developed from the 16th to 19th centuries. It led the Bulgarian people to make demands for language education as well.

Modern Bulgarian borrows many Turkish words and is influenced by Romanian, Albanian, Russian and others. One interesting example of body language in Bulgaria is that shaking the head back and forth means ‘Yes’ and nodding the head up and down means ‘No’.

The official language of Burma is called “Myanmar language” or Burmese. It is spoken by 32 million people and an additional 10 million people also speak Burmese as a second language in neighbouring countries.

The standard dialect of Burmese is influenced by Yangon, which is a former capital of Burma. A southern Indian alphabet called Mon became the basis of the unique Burmese alphabet. The second language in Burma is English: it is taught from kindergarten on and most academia and media is in English.

One interesting fact about Myanmar culture is that they have no family name and the initial of their name is decided by the day of birth (Monday –Sunday). It also changes depending on age and social standing throughout their lives.

The Cambodian language is officially called “Khmer” and is spoken by the Khmer people as the official language of Cambodia. It is the second most widely spoken Austro-Asiatic language.

This original Hindi language has roots deep in many languages such as Khmer, Thai, Laotian, and Burmese. Khmer speakers number 12 million in Cambodia and about 21 million in the world.

About Traditional Chinese

About Farsi (Persian) Language

European French

About German Language

About Indonesian (Malay)

About Japanese Language

Japanese is spoken by 130 million people in Japan. It is from the Japonic language family and not directly related to any other language.

About Korean Language

Korean is the official language of South and North Korea and is spoken by more than 78 million people. It is not clear which language family Korean belongs to. It is similar to Japanese but distinct from Chinese.

Korean is now mainly spelled in “Hangul” Korean alphabet and occassionally uses Hanja (Chinese characters) to differentiate words of Chinese origin.

The language has various systems of polite speech and expressions of honour that need proper vocabulary and verb endings. Modern Korean has several different dialects including the standard one (Pyojuneo or Pyojunmal) used in Seoul and central areas, but they are similar enough that speakers/listeners do not have trouble understanding each other.

Although there are many ethnic groups in Laos and each group has their own language, they usually speak Laotian as well. The Laotian alphabet was modified many times in last 50 years, including a reduction of consonants. This change made the language easier to use for non-native Laotian speakers.

It was the native language of the Romans, who spread it throughout their empire. After the collapse of Rome, it evolved into Italian, French, Spanish, and several other languages.

Latin is often considered a dead language but many scholars and missionaries speak it fluently and it is still taught in many schools and universities. It is said that 80% of English words are derived from Latin through French.

Most Latvian people also speak Russian therefore they are considered similar however Latvian is not related to Russian. The only language similar to Latvian is Lithuanian. It is one of two Baltic languages, a group of its own within the family of Indo-European languages.

There are three dialects used in Latvia which are Livonian, Latgalian, and standard Latvian.

It is considered the oldest surviving Indo-European language. Some words in Lithuanian are very similar to Sanskrit and Latin. It developed from Latin and is also influenced by many languages such as Polish, German, and Czech in writing style.

There are two dialects, Aukštaitian (Highland Lithuanian), considered the standard dialect, and Samogitian (Lowland Lithuanian).

A South Slavic language, Macedonian is spoken as a first language by about 2–3 million people chiefly in Macedonia. It has a large number of borrowings from the Turkish language and a significant number from the Greek language. It is closely related to and shares a high degree of mutual intelligibility with the Bulgarian, Serbian, Bosnian, and Croatian languages.

The standard writing style appeared in 1945. Literary Macedonian is considered a derived dialect from the West Central region. The Cyrillic alphabet is commonly used in Macedonia but the Roman alphabet was also incorporated with the Cyrillic alphabet.

Malay is derived from Austronesian, which is one of the world’s largest language families, and spoken in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand. Standard Malay speakers number about 18 million but there are a further 170 million people who speak Indonesian, which is a form of Malay.

Malay became the official language of Malaysia in 1968. It developed from a dialect which was used in the southern Malay Peninsula. Modern Indonesian, a standardized form of Malay, and Malay Language share about 80% of the same vocabulary. Indonesian and Malaysian speakers can usually communicate quite easily. Malay has been widely influenced and borrowed words from many languages such as Arabic, Sanskrit, Portuguese, Dutch, certain Chinese dialects and more recently, English.

Malayalam can be divided into three regional dialects. As with many Indian languages or dialects, differences between each dialect in Malayalam are related to the caste system and social structures. Its unique alphabet has changed many times. The most recent change was during the 1970’s and 1980’s, when it was simplified to ease printing and typesetting. But this change was not applied consistently; therefore modern writing is often a combination of both traditional and simplified Malayalam characters.

It is believed to be 1300 years old and evolved from Sanskrit through Prakrit and Apabhramsha. Like many Indian languages, Marathi has many dialects. The standard Marathi is based on the Pune region dialect which is used in academia and print media. This standardized dialect is also considered a posh language in the region.

Therefore there is much debate about whether Moldavian is a dialect of Romanian, or a separate language. According to linguistic studies, it is considered the same language as Romanian. However, the constitution of Moldova has indentified Moldavian as the official language of the country rather than Romanian. Also, Moldovan people have long alleged their linguistic identity from Romania. Many scholars have been researching this interesting language history.

The most recognised dialect is Khalkha, which is spoken in the capital city of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar and other parts of Mongolia. There are estimated to be over 2 million words in Mongolian, and eight different writing systems have been used throughout its history.

In the early 20^th century, both Latin and Cyrillic alphabets were adopted. The classic writing style which is written vertically was used until the Mongolian government decided to abolish it in 1940. However, since 1994 efforts have been made to bring it back. In fact, it is taught in some schools and used for decorative purposes by artists and designers.

Nepali is categorized into three main dialects: Eastern, Central, and Western. However, differences are relatively unclear because there is little historical separation or development as in other languages.

Norwegian can be categorized into 5 main dialects which are quite different from each other, especially in the two official writing forms regulated by the Norwegian Language Council. Even some native speakers sometimes find it difficult to read Nynorsk “new Norwegian” and Bokmal “book language”.

The dialects of Oriya can be divided into seven major groups. One of the dialects, Mughalbandi Oriya, is considered as proper or standard Oriya due to literary traditions.

Polish is the official language of Poland and is spoken by approximately 40 million people worldwide. It has been designated as one of official languages of the European Union since 2004. Polish is the second most spoken Slavic language, after Russian, and it is also one of the most difficult languages to learn due to very complicated grammar.

Standard Polish is spoken by all Polish speakers, though there are many dialects that are unique to the various regions of Poland. Native Polish speakers have no difficulties understanding all the variations because there are few differences from the standard Polish.

About Portuguese Language

Portuguese is a Romance language, with the Portuguese vocabulary having its roots in Latin. It is spoken worldwide by 250 million people mainly in Brazil, Portugal and other former Portuguese colonies. Brazilian Portuguese

The most important diverging point in the Brazilian Portuguese language was the contact with Brazilian Indians. It was continually used in the Amazon and western Brazil until 19^th century.

During that time, Tupian was strongly influenced by Portuguese and accepted a number of words and expressions. Although the origin of the language is Portugal, the largest number of Portuguese speakers in the world is in Brazil.

About Tagalog Language

Tagalog is a Philippine language of the Austronesian language family, spoken primarily in the Philippines by around 30 million speakers and another 60 million speakers worldwide. The Mughal Empire, an imperial power in South Asia that ruled a large portion of the Indian subcontinent from 1526 to 1858, saw many languages develop due to trade and travel. Urdu was influenced the most during this time because in trade business, a high level of Persian and Arabic was used therefore Urdu was needed to communicate with others.

Until 1928, the Arabic alphabet was used to write Uzbek but the Latin alphabet was later accepted in order to standardize the language and educate the Uzbek people. However, the Cyrillic alphabet was forced on them in 1940. After the dissolution of the USSR, there was a shift to reintroduce the Latin alphabet.

To this day in Uzbekistan, the language is still in a transition period. A standardized dialect can be understood by all Uzbek speakers because it is used for mass media and publications. Both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabet can be used in writing.
